Police investigate link between two sexual assaults in Bristol

Police are investigating a possible link between a serious sexual assault in St George, Bristol, a week ago today, and an earlier incident of indecent assault.

Detectives will be at the Kingsway tonight (Wednesday), asking passers-by if they have any information which could help the investigation into the assault on a 16-year-old girl at around 9.30pm on Wednesday May 30.

DC Sam Donati said: "We are now exploring possible link with a previous assault which happened near the same spot at about 10.15pm on Friday May 11.

"In that incident two 16-year-old girls were walking home along the Kingsway when a man appeared from an alleyway and indecently assaulted one of the girls before being pushed away and making off back down the alley."

The man involved in the May 11 incident was described as white and about 6ft tall, with a Bristolian accent and wearing a black balaclava.

The man involved in the May 30 incident was also said to be white and covered his face with sunglasses and a beanie hat. His age is estimated at between 20 and 40.

DC Donati said: "I would like to reassure local people that we have increased our patrols of the area and are carrying out a very thorough investigation into both these incidents. This sort of attack is thankfully unusual, but we would always urge people to take care when out at night.

"Plan your route home by pre-booking a taxi or arranging a lift or walking home with friends, staying in well-lit and busy areas."

He added that the girls were being supported by the police and independent Sexual Assault Referral Centre, The Bridge.

Detectives are especially keen to hear from a man who was walking his dog in the area on Wednesday May 30 and also from the drivers of two cars passing by, a Vauxhall Zafira and a small dark-coloured car similar to a Suzuki SX4 carrying lengths of wood or similar on the roof rack (pictured on CCTV).

Anyone with any information which could help the investigation is asked to contact Operation Bluestone on 101.

Alternatively call the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111. They never ask your name or trace your call.
