Dead body found in Knowle turns out to be mattress

Ambulance crew got a shock today when they found a body they had been called to deal with in Knowle was nothing more than a mattress.
The crew was called out after a member of the public believed they had seen a dead body under a duvet in the street.
Ambulance crew, who were in the area at the time, were first on the scene at just after 9.15am, but found nothing more than a mattress underneath the duvet.
The Great Western Air Ambulance Charity was also poised to dispatch a crew, after being told a body had been discovered.
Daniel Thomas, media manager at the charity, said: "We got a call from our special operations desk early this morning to say that a body had been discovered in Knowle and to have a standing crew ready.
"They would not have been immediately dispatched. We got the call minutes later to stand down.
"We got the call to stand ready for a body in Knowle, but really there was a marked difference.
"It is quite common for us to be told to get ready for, say, a road accident, and then later when road traffic police get there they find it's just whiplash or something. But we've never had a call out that turned out to be a mattress before. We've got a sense of humour about it."
Mr Thomas explained: "To be called out for a body is quite unusual. We would not go out if it was known that the individual was deceased. But if they had hypothermia or something like that, if they were on death's door, then we would get sent out.
"We get called about all sorts of things, but this is the first time that a major incident was a mattress."
The 'incident' was reported on the @GWAAC Twitter account: "Placed on alert for body found in Knowle, Bristol. On closer inspection turned out to be a mattress. #notthesamething".
A spokesperson for Avon and Somerset Constabulary said: "It was a false alarm with good intent, we assume."
Great Western Air Ambulance is a charity which can only survive if it raises �1.5 million a year.
