Pest controller tried to groom girl under 12

A RENTOKIL worker who turned from pest control to sex pest has been handed a suspended jail term.

Michael Dullaghan, 62, handed the girl, who was aged under 12, a note asking if she would perform a sex act on him, Bristol Crown Court heard.

He also gave her a child's door sign saying "Top Totty".

The confused youngster told her family and the matter was reported to police.

Dullaghan, of Elm Farm, Tockington, pleaded guilty to causing or inciting a child to engage in sexual activity.

Judge Simon Darwall-Smith imposed a 12 months prison sentence, suspended for two years.

He told Dullaghan: "This was an extremely foolish act and is something which (the victim) will probably never forget.

"It has affected her psychologically. You were trying her out by giving her this note and extremely inappropriate gift."

The judge ordered Dullaghan to be supervised for two years and made him the subject of an indefinite sexual offences prevention order barring him from unsupervised contact with children.

He was told to register as a sex offender for five years.

The girl's mother told the Evening Post: "It makes me feel sick to the stomach. My daughter has been left more and angry and aggressive in her nature by this and I think the sentence is absolutely disgusting."

Kenneth Bell, prosecuting, said how the girl reported that Dullaghan was "turned on" by her and how he gave her the present and lewd note.

The girl's mother gave a victim impact statement in which she charted how her youngster had gone from a quiet and calm child to being angry.

She expressed concern that Dullaghan had tested the child to see what her reaction was, as a possible pre-text for sexual relations.

Tabitha Macfarlane, defending, said her remorseful client was sorry for making a huge mistake.

She said: "He felt lonely and isolated. He had thoughts about (the girl) on his own and he was desperate to have a relationship with her.

"His feelings became blurred. He's keen to explore his feelings for her. It's very fortunate she came forward. He's frightened by what may have happened."

Detective Constable Kerina Balchin, the police officer in charge of the case, said: "I would say Mr Dullaghan is a concerning person who really was testing a young, naive girl to see what her response would be to sexual grooming."
